Lifetime Fitness

The primary goal of Making It Better's Lifetime Fitness Program is teaching the importance of nutrition, exercise and sports to reduce the chance of childhood obesity, as well as making healthy lifestyle choices including the avoidance of drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Lifetime Fitness is a major component of the Steps 2 Success After School Program.

Childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in Harris County. Poor nutrition and inadequate physical activity are the fundamental causes of childhood obesity.

  • Texas ranks 32nd (50th being the worst) in overall prevalence of childhood obesity.
  • 32.2% of Texas children are considered overweight or obese.
  • Over the past 20 years, the prevalence of overweight children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 19 has nearly tripled.

Offering Solutions - Through Lifetime Fitness Program

MIB's Lifetime Fitness Program integrates all facets of wellness and has three main components:

  • Nutrition
  • Exercise and Sports
  • Healthy Lifestyle Choices

Preventing childhood obesity is a collective responsibility requiring individual, family, community, corporate, and governmental commitments. Making It Better is taking the first step in educating both the children and families it served about healthy lifestyle choices Providing education on all facets of wellness, MIB is playing a critical role in reducing the incidence of childhood obesity among the children it serves while increasing their self-esteem helping them to lead long, healthy, and productive lives.

Our Approach

Making It Better has implemented Lifetime Fitness as a new component of its afterschool program. The Lifetime Fitness program is based on the EmpowerME4Life curriculum. The EmpowerME4Life (link to www.empowerme2be.org) curriculum is comprised of eight 45 minute sessions providing education on all facets of wellness, including nutrition, exercise/sports, and healthy lifestyle choices.
