Our Mission
Making It Better (MIB) is a Houston area non-profit established to improve the quality of life for low income, at-risk children by offering them academic intervention, positive activities and role models. MIB was founded in 2006 by Jerry Davis, a former Westside High School Dean of Students and head lacrosse coach, to address the severe disadvantages faced by low income children in the Houston area. MIB offers a variety of programs that are tailored to meet the needs of each campus.
Since our first program began with a mere 91 students attending 1 school, we have experienced continued growth. We expect to serve approximately 1,600 students, attending 8 HISD schools during the 2011-12 school year.
Whether the program is academic or enrichment, delivered during or after school, on a school campus or in an apartment-based program; MIB's overarching goal is always the same…developing relationships and improving self-esteem by:
- sparking creativity
- fostering the desire to succeed
- developing social skills
- expanding life experiences
Targeted students are in grades 1-8 and attend Paul Revere Middle and seven elementary schools–Askew, Walnut Bend, Shearn, Red, Bruce, Robinson & Shadowbriar–all HISD schools. Students have been identified by their classroom teachers as having academic difficulties and/or discipline or social issues and 87% are economically disadvantaged.
